Since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1966, Barbados has built a foreign policy defined by pragmatism, multilateral engagement, and close coordination with its Caribbean neighbors. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, which answers to the Prime Minister, oversees the island's diplomatic missions and its participation in international bodies including the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Organization of American States. On the day of independence, Barbados formalized diplomatic relations with the United States, Canada, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and India, establishing a network of ties that has expanded steadily in the decades since.
Regional integration has remained central to the country's international outlook. Barbados was a founding member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) when it emerged from the earlier Caribbean Free Trade Association in 1973, and successive governments have continued to describe CARICOM as a strategic anchor for coordinating trade, security, and climate policy with fellow member states. The country is also active in the Association of Caribbean States and maintains long-standing ties with the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth partners, reflecting both its colonial history and its ongoing economic and cultural links to Europe.
In recent years Barbadian diplomacy has broadened beyond its traditional partners, with the government pursuing closer ties with countries such as South Korea and expanding engagement across the Global South alongside its continued participation in the OAS and the United Nations. Climate change has become a recurring theme in this outreach, as Barbados, like many small island states, has pressed larger economies for greater financing and accountability in international negotiations. This combination of regional solidarity, hemispheric cooperation, and selective global outreach continues to define the country's approach to foreign affairs.
